Our popular and free to the public, Lunch and Learn programs begin 2017 with a presentation by the respected composer, arranger, educator, and musician John LaBarbera. Join us on Tuesday, January 17 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM as we learn more about his remarkable career. LaBarbera hails from a second generation Italian American family steeped in music which can be considered an amazing and inspirational success story.

LaBarbera is a two time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts award for Jazz Composition and has also served with the NEA as a panelist in the music category. Although most of LaBarbera’s output is in jazz, he has also composed and recorded music for symphony orchestra, brass quintet, and other musical ensembles. Among the musical luminaries that LaBarbera has worked and recorded with include Sammy Davis Jr., Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Mel Torme, and Chaka Khan.

LaBarbera was the co-producer and arranger for the Glenn Miller Orchestra Christmas recordings (In the Christmas Mood I & II) which earned both Gold and Platinum Record status. His big band CD (On the Wild Side) was nominated for a Grammy and his other recordings on the Jazz Compass Label have met with artistic and commercial success. A highly respected educator, John LaBarbera is a Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Louisville School of Music Jazz Studies Department. LaBarbera’s published works are considered standards in the field of jazz education.
