POSTPONED: Simple Victorian Flowers: Workshop with Gabrielle Mayer
April 11, 2020  |  11:00 AM-12:30 PM

Join artist Gabrielle Mayer to learn basic techniques to make simple Victorian hair flowers. Participants will use yarn, horsehair, and synthetic human hair to create these hair flowers. Participants will also briefly explore ways to use the basic flower structure to make leaves or more complex flowers. This workshop is free and materials are provided.

While making art out of human hair predates the Victorian era, it truly blossomed during Queen Victoria’s reign. Hair took on the form of flowers, trees and wreaths, was woven into jewelry, glued together and cut into designs, and ground into medium to make paintings. While there is an association of Victorian hair art with death and loss, many works were created and given as tokens of esteem, affection and affiliation.  This program is in conjunction with the exhibition Permanent and Natural, in which Mayer is an exhibiting artist.

Mayer is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute (BFA) and Bowling Green State University, Ohio (MFA) and has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the University of Louisville. Her exhibition highlights include 2019 KMAC Couture at KMAC Museum in Louisville, Phyto-philic: New Works by Gabrielle Mayer and Gail Wisdom at Cressman Center for Visual Arts, University of Louisville, and Pop Explosion: the Artist and Popular Culture at Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, among others.
