Join us as we welcome three participating artists in our current #BlackArtMatters exhibition for a free, panel discussion moderated by WFPL’s “Strange Fruit” podcast team. The three visual artists are Fahamu Pecou of Atlanta and Scherazade Tillet and Stephen Flemister of Chicago. Moderators will be Dr. Kaila Story and Jaison Gardner. The evening program will explore artist histories, ideas of public and private identities, and how current events relate and inform each other’s work. A light reception will proceed the conversation.

Atlanta-based Fahamu Pecou is primarily a painter and scholar, but works across several different media including video and performance. Of late, Pecou’s work has focused on representations of black masculinity and how these images come to “…define black men across generations and geographical boundaries”. Pecou’s work combines observations on hip-hop, fine art, and popular culture.

Stephen Flemister hails from Chicago’s south side. He is a mixed media artist whose work is “…concerned with the modern portrait through the lens of contemporary digital culture, and the ways in which we “see” one another, and alter our personal image for public consumption in contemporary culture.”

Scheherazade Tillet is an artist, curator, organizer, and co-founder and Executive Director of A Long Walk Home (ALWH). a Chicago-based, national not for profit, that uses art to educate, mobilize, and empower young people to end violence against girls and women. In 2014, Tillet was named one of Chicago’s 100 Women of Inspiration by Today’s Chicago Woman Magazine.

Strange Fruit is a weekly podcast produced by WFPL. It’s hosts, Dr. Kaila Story and Jaison Gardner are interested in politics, pop culture, and black gay life.
