“Kites rise highest against the wind – not with it.”

   –Winston Churchill

Do you remember the last time you watched a kite? Their jumping, dipping dance is mesmerizing. And the designs. The designs are whimsical and enchanting. June 9th’s Family Fun activity is making and decorating a really simple little “kite” that swoops and dances behind a running person. Free.

Materials

  • Paper “lunch” bags
  • Streamers
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Stickers
  • Yarn
  • Clear tape
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. With the bag flat and unopened on a table, draw, color, and place stickers on both wide sides of the lunch bag.
  2. Cut streamers, and tape one end of each streamer to the bottom of the opened-up lunch bag.
  3. Cut a piece of yarn approximately 3 feet long, and tape it to the inside of one of the skinny sides of the lunch bag.
  4. Hold the yarn while you run, so the decorated and streamer-bedecked bag flutters behind you as air fills it. Or, move your arm and/or wrist while standing still in order to make the bag “dance.”
