The Carnegie Center for Art & History is pleased to participate in the 2017 Louisville Photo Biennial with two very important exhibitions that pull back the curtain to give viewers a chance to glimpse rarely seen spaces and places.
Capturing Contemporary Cuba by Ray Wallace presents selected street and documentary images taken during a 2017 photo workshop visit to Havana, Regla, and Vinales. Wallace’s black and white photographs capture contemporary life in Cuba, with various street portraits and images of markets, tobacco growers and producers, western and Afro-Caribbean dancers, school children, and boxers in training. Dr. Ray Wallace is an award-winning nature and travel photographer and is Chancellor of Indiana University Southeast.
Stage/D by Laura Hartford gives viewers a behind the scenes look into the methods and materials used to create her surreal images. The exhibition displays pieces and props from some of her previously constructed installations alongside the photographs they were used to create. Hartford also invites you to take photos of yourself as the subject in one of her “stages” and post them on a publicly-viewable Instagram account using the hashtag #CarnegieStageD to become a part of the exhibition. Laura Hartford teaches photography and digital art and serves as an Associate Dean at Bellarmine University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
